Delhi Government Unveils 'Dekho Meri Dilli' Electric Double-Decker Bus Service to Revitalize Tourism
In a significant move to boost tourism, the Delhi government officially launched the 'Dekho Meri Dilli' double-decker bus service on Friday. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta flagged off the inaugural vehicles, marking a revival of double-decker buses in the capital after a hiatus since 1989.
Features and Route Details of the New Tourism Bus
The 63-seater electric bus is equipped with advanced safety systems and features a panoramic upper deck, allowing visitors to enjoy unobstructed views of Delhi's rich heritage and contemporary landmarks. According to a senior official, the service will operate daily, starting at 9 am from Delhi Haat.
Launched by Delhi's tourism department in collaboration with the Hinduja Group, the bus will cover key destinations including:
- Vijay Chowk
- Rashtrapati Bhavan
- North Block and South Block
- National Museum
- National Gallery of Modern Art
- Prime Minister's Museum
- National War Memorial
- India Gate
The route is designed to conclude at INA, providing a comprehensive tour of Lutyens' Delhi. The fare is set at Rs 500 plus a 5% GST, with children aged 5-10 years charged Rs 300 plus GST. Tickets are available online via the Delhi tourism website and offline at designated counters in locations such as Connaught Place, INA, and Indira Gandhi International Airport.
Expansion Plans and Evening Tours
Officials have announced plans to introduce more buses in the coming months, depending on public response. Additionally, evening tours are in the pipeline, with the route largely finalized. Since the Pradhanmantri Sangrahalaya closes at 6 pm, these tours will begin from the museum and proceed to other destinations, offering a unique nighttime experience.
The double-decker bus can accommodate over 63 passengers besides the driver and is intended to cater to both domestic and foreign tourists. It is strategically designed to operate primarily in Lutyens' Delhi, highlighting the area's architectural and historical significance.
Government Vision and Statements
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta emphasized that this initiative aligns with the Prime Minister's vision of development alongside heritage preservation. She noted that Delhi, renowned for its historical legacy, is also forging a new global identity through modern landmarks such as Bharat Mandapam, Yashobhoomi, the new Parliament Building, and the Central Vista. The bus service will enable tourists to experience this blend of heritage and modernity in a single ride, she added.
Tourism Minister Kapil Mishra described the launch as more than just introducing a vehicle; it is an effort to position Delhi on the global tourism map. He highlighted that the capital, home to over 1,200 monuments, offers a unique integration of ancient civilization, British-era heritage, and world-class modern infrastructure. Mishra also revealed plans to host global events, including an international film festival, live entertainment, and initiatives to boost the creator economy.
Revival of Double-Decker Buses in Delhi
The launch marks the return of double-decker buses to Delhi's streets, which were phased out in 1989 due to an aging fleet. Initially, two double-decker buses will operate, with potential expansions based on demand. This revival is seen as a nostalgic yet forward-looking step to enhance the city's tourism appeal and provide an eco-friendly travel option.
Overall, the 'Dekho Meri Dilli' service represents a concerted effort by the Delhi government to promote sustainable tourism and showcase the capital's diverse attractions, from historical sites to modern marvels, to visitors from around the world.
