Fog Chaos: IndiGo Cancels 13 Flights, Airlines Issue Advisories for Delhi, North India
Flight cancellations, delays as fog hits Delhi, Chandigarh airports

Major Indian airlines, including IndiGo, SpiceJet, and Air India, have issued travel advisories warning passengers of significant disruptions due to dense fog blanketing several airports across North India. The adverse weather conditions, which severely reduced visibility on Sunday, 28 December 2025, have led to a wave of flight cancellations and delays, impacting travel plans during the holiday season.

Widespread Flight Disruptions and Cancellations

The low visibility procedures were activated at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport as early as 6:00 AM. IndiGo announced the cancellation of 13 flights scheduled for 28 December, with the majority attributed to the bad weather. Only two of these were cited as being due to operational reasons. The cancellations affected a network of key routes connecting major cities such as Delhi, Chandigarh, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Amritsar, Jaipur, Pune, and Gaya.

This follows a larger disruption the previous day, where IndiGo had cancelled 57 flights across its network in anticipation of foggy conditions, particularly in Chandigarh.

Airlines Urge Passengers to Check Flight Status

All affected carriers have proactively communicated with passengers, urging them to verify their flight's status before commencing their journey to the airport.

Air India posted on X, forecasting dense fog for northern cities including Chandigarh, Amritsar, and Varanasi. The airline stated it had taken proactive steps to minimize disruptions but assured passengers that ground staff would be available to assist with any unexpected delays, diversions, or cancellations.

SpiceJet issued a detailed advisory, listing multiple airports where operations were likely to be affected. These include Delhi (DEL), Amritsar (ATQ), Jammu (IXJ), Ayodhya (AYJ), Gorakhpur (GOP), Varanasi (VNS), Darbhanga (DBR), Patna (PAT), Guwahati (GAU), and Bagdogra (IXB). The airline warned that both arrivals and departures, along with their connecting flights, could face disruptions.

IndiGo also cited low visibility and fog over Agartala, Amritsar, Dibrugarh, and Guwahati, advising passengers to monitor their flight schedule via the airline's official website or mobile application.

Travel Plans in Disarray Across Northern Region

The widespread fog cover has thrown air travel into chaos across a significant part of the country. The advisory from Delhi Airport confirming the implementation of Low Visibility Procedures underscores the severity of the conditions. Passengers traveling to and from key hubs in North India are experiencing the brunt of the weather-induced delays, with the situation causing a ripple effect on connecting flights and schedules nationwide. The incident highlights the recurring challenge that fog poses to winter aviation in India, testing the preparedness and response mechanisms of airlines and airport authorities during the peak travel period.
