Multiple Safety Incidents Reported Across Goa's Popular Beaches
South Goa's coastal areas are once again under scrutiny following a series of concerning incidents, ranging from animal attacks to tourist rescues. The latest episode occurred at Colva beach, where beach marshal Pratik Velip was bitten by a stray dog during his routine patrol duties. Velip was promptly transported to a medical facility for necessary treatment, underscoring the persistent issue of stray dogs in the region.
Recurring Dog Attacks and Voyeurism Cases
This incident is not isolated, as the Majorda-Benaulim belt has witnessed multiple attacks on tourists and lifeguards by dogs over the past year, raising alarms about public safety. In a separate but equally troubling event at Baga beach, beach marshal Nilofer Usgaonkar intervened when she noticed a tourist from Madhya Pradesh photographing a foreign tourist without consent. Usgaonkar immediately alerted the Goa police, who escorted the man to the beach tower for further action, highlighting ongoing concerns about voyeurism by domestic tourists.
Dramatic Search and Rescue Operations
At Colva beach, lifeguards encountered a 25-year-old woman from Bihar who expressed suicidal intentions following a reported argument with her husband. Initially found crying near a jet ski, she vanished from the area, triggering an intense search. Lifesavers coordinated with Goa police, and the woman was eventually located in a nearby garden. The couple was subsequently taken to the police station for assistance and counseling.
Successful Tourist Rescues Amidst Challenges
In more positive developments, lifesavers at Morjim beach rescued a 40-year-old tourist from Bengaluru who became trapped in deep water while swimming. Using a rescue boat and jet ski, the team safely brought the individual to shore. Meanwhile, at Candolim beach, five lifesavers provided first aid to a tourist from Rajasthan who was experiencing continuous vomiting and breathing difficulties. She was transferred to the North Goa District Hospital, where she is currently recovering, demonstrating the critical role of lifeguards in emergency situations.
These incidents collectively emphasize the multifaceted safety challenges faced by Goa's beaches, from animal control and privacy violations to medical emergencies, necessitating ongoing vigilance and improved measures.
