Goa Tourism Department Demands Evidence from Shack Owner Following Violent Tourist Assault
The Goa tourism department has taken a firm stance in the aftermath of a violent altercation at the Planet Goa Restaurant and Shack on Calangute beach. Following claims by the shack operators that a group of tourists from Bengaluru instigated the fight, the department has formally requested the licence holder to provide comprehensive evidence to substantiate these allegations.
Department Seeks Video Footage and Detailed Report
Tourism director Kedar Naik, who temporarily suspended the shack's licence on March 25, conducted the first hearing in the matter on Monday. During the proceedings, the department explicitly asked the licensee, Francisco Rosario, to submit video evidence, including CCTV camera footage, and a detailed report by April 6. Rosario, who holds the licence for shack 16 at Umta Vaddo, Calangute beach, has denied the victims' version of the assault, prompting the department's demand for proof.
"The department will take a final decision after that," Naik stated, emphasizing that the evidence will be crucial in determining the outcome of the case.
Background of the Violent Incident
The licence suspension came after a video surfaced showing shack employees engaged in a physical brawl with a group of seven tourists from Bengaluru, including 27-year-old businessman Sayed Zakir. According to police reports, the altercation began when staff asked the tourists to vacate a beach bed, leading to an argument that quickly escalated. The situation turned violent as shack workers allegedly attacked the tourists using metal rods and beach umbrella poles.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that two individuals involved in the assault are habitual offenders with prior criminal records, adding a layer of seriousness to the incident. This has raised concerns about safety and security at popular tourist destinations in Goa.

In response to the violence, the tourism department is considering severe penalties, including the permanent cancellation of the shack licence and forfeiture of the security deposit.
