Hampi to Get 20 'Traveller Nooks' by March 2026 Under Swadesh Darshan 2.0
In a significant move to boost tourism infrastructure, the Karnataka government is set to roll out 'traveller nooks' at the UNESCO World Heritage site of Hampi by March 2026. This initiative aims to enhance visitor amenities and improve the overall tourist experience at this iconic destination.
Project Details and Implementation
Presiding over a review meeting at the deputy commissioner's office in Hosapete (Vijayanagara), DC Kavita S Mannikeri announced that 20 locations in and around Hampi will feature these traveller nooks. Key sites include:
- Mayur Bhuvaneshwari Hotel
- Chandrakeshwar Temple
- Vijaya Vitthal Temple
- Virupaksha Temple
Mannikeri emphasised the importance of timely execution, directing officials to quickly resolve any space constraints or implementation hurdles. "If there is any shortage of space or any obstacle to implementation, a solution should be found quickly so that the project is completed within the stipulated time," she stated.
Funding and Scheme Background
The project is being implemented under the central government's Swadesh Darshan 2.0 scheme, with the Ministry of Tourism sanctioning Rs 25.6 crore. Union Minister for Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat confirmed this timeline during the winter session of the Rajya Sabha, responding to a question from member Narayana Koragappa.
Shekhawat informed the House that "the Ministry of Tourism directed the state government to ensure completion of the Hampi project before March 2026." Karnataka Tourism Infrastructure Ltd (KTIL) has been designated as the State Implementing Agency for setting up these traveller nooks.
Amenities and Categorisation
The traveller nooks will offer a range of essential facilities under one roof, designed to boost tourist footfall. Amenities include:
- Drinking water stations
- Clean toilets
- ATMs
- Retail kiosks
- Shaded seating areas at affordable prices
Officials revealed that the units will be set up along major tourist trails and categorised into three segments:
- Noble
- Royal
- Imperial
Each category will offer different levels of services to visitors, catering to diverse needs and preferences.
Broader Impact and Heritage Sensitivity
Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2024, this initiative is part of nationwide efforts to improve infrastructure and visitor services at major tourist destinations. The project is expected to significantly strengthen tourism infrastructure in Hampi while ensuring that development remains sensitive to the site's archaeological and cultural heritage.
By providing comprehensive amenities, the traveller nooks aim to make Hampi more accessible and enjoyable for tourists, potentially increasing visitor numbers and supporting local economies. The focus on timely completion and heritage conservation underscores a balanced approach to tourism development.
