Himachal Plans 77 Eco-Tourism Sites for Rs 200 Crore Revenue

Himachal Pradesh Unveils Major Eco-Tourism Expansion

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has announced an ambitious plan to open 77 new eco-tourism sites across the state. This initiative aims to generate nearly Rs 200 crore in revenue over the next five years.

Historic Transformation in Tourism

Sukhu stated that Himachal is experiencing a historic transformation in its tourism sector. He credited this shift to the Congress government's vision of 'Vyavastha Parivartan'. The chief minister emphasized that this approach integrates conservation efforts with livelihood creation and economic growth.

"This holistic strategy was completely neglected during the previous BJP regime," Sukhu remarked during a public function on Wednesday. He highlighted that the new Eco-Tourism Policy demonstrates how ecology and tourism can develop together under responsible governance.

Pong Dam Lake Development

The state government is actively developing Pong Dam Lake into one of India's premier bird-watching destinations. This Ramsar Wetland site attracts particular attention between November and February each year.

New attractions are being introduced to enhance the eco-tourism experience. Visitors and ornithologists can soon enjoy shikara rides and floating bird-watching decks. These facilities will provide excellent opportunities to observe migratory birds arriving from Siberia and Mongolia.

Enhanced Tourist Facilities

The Pong Dam Lake Bird Sanctuary at Nagrota Surian now offers guided bird-watching tours. Meanwhile, the Regional Water Sports Centre at Khatiyar provides comprehensive facilities for various water activities.

Visitors can participate in boating, kayaking, sailing, rowing, and water skiing at this centre. These developments represent significant improvements in the state's tourism infrastructure.

Revitalizing Neglected Water Bodies

Sukhu criticized previous governments for lacking vision in utilizing the state's water resources for revenue generation. He pointed to specific examples where transformation has occurred under the current administration.

"Lakes such as Gobind Sagar in Bilaspur and Tattapani near Shimla remained neglected for years," the chief minister noted. "We have now transformed them into thriving tourism hubs offering shikara rides, houseboats, jet skis, and other water sports."

Bilaspur as Adventure Tourism Hub

Bilaspur is emerging as a national center for water-based adventure tourism. This development creates substantial employment opportunities for local communities across the region.

Sukhu emphasized that tourism represents more than mere recreation for Himachal Pradesh. "Tourism is about livelihoods and inclusive economic growth," he declared, underscoring the policy's broader social objectives.

The eco-tourism initiative reflects the state government's commitment to sustainable development. By balancing environmental conservation with economic benefits, Himachal Pradesh aims to set new standards in responsible tourism management.
