Kerala's Asramam Lakefront Hub Advances with Investor

Kerala's Asramam Lakefront Leisure Hub Takes a Significant Step Forward

The proposed lakefront leisure and entertainment hub at Asramam in Kollam, Kerala, has moved closer to realization as the Kerala Maritime Board (KMB) has successfully identified an investor for this ambitious project. Designed as a vibrant getaway destination, the hub aims to attract tourists and foster social interaction among local residents, transforming an underutilized area into a dynamic revenue-generating asset.

Project Details and Features

Spanning across 1.78 acres of KMB land situated between Ashramam Road and the scenic Ashtamudi Lake, the hub will offer a diverse range of attractions. Key features include:

  • A futuristic infotainment and gaming zone for immersive experiences.
  • A water sports club catering to adventure enthusiasts.
  • Gourmet dining options and community spaces for social gatherings.
  • A unique floating restaurant built on a repurposed dredger, adding a novel culinary experience.

Additionally, the developer is required to install a waterfront promenade with open-air seating, a container restaurant, a restobar, an art wall, and screens. Entry to the hub will be ticketed, ensuring controlled access and maintenance.

Strategic Location and Economic Impact

The site's strategic location near the National Waterway enhances its appeal, with proximity to popular tourist attractions such as the Thangassery Lighthouse, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Police Museum, Ashramam Picnic Village, and Kollam beach. Munroe Island and the Jatayu Earth Centre are less than an hour away, allowing tourists to combine visits for a multifaceted experience.

An official stated, "The land and an old building owned by the board were lying idle for a long time. The site will be handed over to the developer for 30 years and operated in a joint venture with the maritime board." This initiative aims to turn unused land into a revenue earner, contributing to the local economy by offering facilities not currently available in the vicinity.

Regulatory Compliance and Future Prospects

The maritime board has confirmed that the project will not be affected by Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) II restrictions, as construction for public places on the landward side, development of plots for tourism, and repair of existing structures are permitted. This clearance paves the way for smooth implementation.

Despite Ashtamudi Lake being one of the largest and deepest backwaters with breathtaking views, its potential as an experiential destination remains untapped. This project is part of broader efforts to develop coastal tourism in Kerala, aligning with regional development goals to enhance visitor experiences and economic growth.
