Kodagu Tourism Stakeholders Press for Urgent Action on Pending Projects and Regulations

In a significant development for the tourism sector, stakeholders in Kodagu district have strongly urged the district administration to accelerate long-pending tourism initiatives and implement stricter oversight of homestays and tourism-related businesses. The call was made during a crucial tourism department meeting chaired by Deputy Commissioner Somashekar SJ in Madikeri on Monday.

Reviving Cleanliness Drives and Addressing Delays

Deputy Commissioner Somashekar SJ proposed reviving the Swachch Sundar Kodagu cleanliness campaign in March to enhance awareness against littering and the use of single-use plastics. This initiative aims to improve the district's environmental appeal and tourist experience.

Nagendra Prasad, president of the District Chamber of Commerce and Industries, highlighted the persistent delay in completing the Kodava Heritage building, a project that has been stalled for decades. He expressed frustration that the issue is frequently discussed without tangible progress, underscoring the need for decisive action to move the project forward.

Crackdown on Illegal Sales and Homestay Regulation

Stakeholder Monti Ganesh raised concerns about the illegal sale of homemade wines, spices, and chocolates that allegedly lack FSSAI certification. He also called for action against counterfeit "Kodagu silk" products being marketed in the district, which could harm the region's reputation and consumer trust.

Tourism department in-charge officer DD Nithin Chakki provided an update on homestay registrations, noting that the process is underway with 100 new applications and 180 renewal applications received. He assured that these would be processed promptly to ensure compliance and quality standards.

Infrastructure Improvements and Plastic Ban Enforcement

Stakeholders also advocated for enhancements at the popular Raja Seat tourist spot, including:

  • Upgrading the children's play area to make it more engaging and safe.
  • Creating better parking facilities to accommodate increasing visitor numbers.
  • Reintroducing the toy train to add a nostalgic and family-friendly attraction.

Additionally, they urged strict enforcement to completely eliminate the sale of single-use plastic across all sectors, aligning with broader environmental goals.

Administrative Assurances and Deadlines

In response, Deputy Commissioner Somashekar SJ assured stakeholders that their concerns would be thoroughly examined. He directed tourism officials to complete all homestay registrations and licence renewals by March 31, setting a clear deadline to address regulatory gaps and boost tourism infrastructure.
