The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Saturday arrested a senior section engineer of the Northeast Frontier Railway's Carriage and Wagon department in Silchar for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 20,000 from a contractor.
Case Registered Against Engineer
According to a CBI statement, the agency registered a case against the railway engineer, Kuntal Chakraborty, on Saturday following a complaint from a contractor. The complainant alleged that a bill of around Rs 20 lakh was pending approval.
Demand for Bribe
The complainant alleged that when he approached the engineer on Friday for clearance of the bill, the official demanded 1 percent of the bill amount to process the payment.
Acting on the complaint, the CBI verified the allegations and caught the engineer red-handed while accepting the bribe from the complainant.
Accused Produced in Court
The accused was produced before a court in Guwahati on Sunday.
