Southern Railway Offers Pillow & Bed Sheet Rentals in Non-AC Coaches
Railway launches pillow & sheet rental in non-AC coaches

In a significant move to enhance passenger comfort, the Chennai division of Southern Railway has announced a new initiative that will benefit travelers in non-AC sleeper coaches. Starting January 1, passengers can rent pillows and bed sheets during their journey, a facility previously available only to AC coach travelers.

Affordable Comfort for Budget Travelers

The railway authorities have set very reasonable rates for this new service. Passengers can rent a pillow with cover for just ₹30, while bed sheets will be available for ₹20. Those who need both items can avail the combo package for only ₹50, making it an affordable luxury for the common traveler.

Initial Implementation Across 10 Express Trains

The facility will initially be introduced in ten prominent express trains originating from Chennai. From Chennai Central station, the service will be available in:

  • Nilgiri Superfast Express
  • Palghat Express
  • Trivandrum Superfast Express
  • Alleppey Superfast Express
  • Mangalore Superfast Express

Additionally, trains originating from Chennai Egmore station will also offer this facility, including:

  • Mannargudi Express
  • Tiruchendur Superfast Express
  • Silambu Superfast Express

Expanding Passenger Amenities

This initiative marks a major step in improving the travel experience for non-AC sleeper class passengers who form the backbone of Indian railway travel. The move demonstrates the railway administration's commitment to providing better amenities to all categories of travelers, not just those in premium classes.

The distribution of pillows and bed sheets was traditionally restricted to AC coach passengers, but this new policy bridges the comfort gap between different travel classes. Railway officials expect this service to be particularly beneficial for overnight journeys where proper sleep comfort becomes essential.

If successful, the program may be expanded to include more trains and routes across the Southern Railway network, potentially revolutionizing budget travel comfort standards in India.
