Tragedy Strikes at Frozen Sela Lake in Arunachal Pradesh
A tourist from Kerala died and another remains missing after a harrowing incident at Sela Lake in Arunachal Pradesh on Friday. The accident occurred when the frozen surface of the high-altitude lake cracked beneath their weight.
How the Incident Unfolded
The seven-member tourist group was exploring the scenic lake area when one member ventured toward the center to position his camera. Without warning, the ice gave way, plunging him into the frigid waters. Two companions immediately attempted a rescue but also fell through the cracking ice.
Authorities received an alert about the emergency situation. The Army's Gajraj Corps quickly mobilized a specialized rescue team to respond to the crisis.
Brave Rescue Operation in Extreme Conditions
Army divers faced tremendous challenges during the rescue mission. They worked in sub-zero temperatures at an altitude of nearly 13,700 feet. Police personnel and local civil administration officials provided crucial assistance throughout the operation.
The rescue team managed to pull two of the three submerged tourists from the icy water. Medical personnel immediately administered first aid to both individuals. Unfortunately, one tourist could not be revived and was declared dead at the scene. The other rescued person survived thanks to prompt medical attention.
Ongoing Search for Missing Tourist
Defence Public Relations Officer Lieutenant Colonel M. Rawat confirmed that search operations continue for the third tourist who remains missing. The Army has deployed additional resources to locate the individual despite the difficult high-altitude conditions.
The remaining members of the tourist group have been safely sheltered at nearby Army camps. They are receiving necessary care and support following the traumatic experience.

The Indian Army reiterated its commitment to humanitarian assistance in the region. Lieutenant Colonel Rawat emphasized that the Army remains dedicated to timely rescue and assistance operations.
