Upper Bari Doab Canal in Amritsar Set for Major Leisure Development

The Punjab government has launched an ambitious initiative to convert a significant stretch of the Upper Bari Doab Canal (UBDC) in Amritsar into a premier leisure destination. This project focuses on the canal belt from Vallah Bridge to Taranwala Pul, aiming to create a modern public space that enhances urban recreation and tourism in the region.

Project Details and Progress

Under this scheme, the Irrigation Department has awarded the contract to Lake Water Spot Company, a private firm that has already commenced work at the site. Officials report that development is advancing steadily, with completion anticipated in the coming weeks. The transformation is designed to provide residents and tourists with a comprehensive recreational experience.

Recreational Facilities and Features

A key highlight of the project is the introduction of boating facilities, expected to open to the public next month. Special ramps are being constructed along the canal to facilitate smooth boarding and deboarding for visitors. The boating stretch will cover approximately two kilometres, offering scenic views from Taranwala Pul to Vallah Bridge.

Beyond boating, the canal front is being developed into a multi-activity zone. Plans include dedicated walking tracks, jet skiing, water scooters, and a specially designed duck area to enhance the site's appeal. These additions are intended to position the location as a central recreational hub in Amritsar.

Environmental and Cleanliness Measures

To address environmental concerns, authorities are installing iron mesh fencing along both sides of the canal to prevent littering. Strict hygiene measures are being implemented to ensure waste is not dumped into the water, maintaining cleanliness and protecting the canal's ecosystem.

Amenities and Tourism Impact

Food courts will be established at designated spots along the stretch, providing hygienic food options for visitors. The government expects this project to not only offer a new leisure space for families but also significantly boost tourism in the area, contributing to the local economy and community well-being.
