Kushinagar has emerged as the undisputed top destination, attracting nearly 3 lakh of the total 4.4 lakh international visitors in 2025 alone. This ancient city, where the Buddha is believed to have attained Mahaparinirvana, has benefited tremendously from the operationalization of Kushinagar International Airport, which now facilitates direct international arrivals particularly from Sri Lanka and Southeast Asian nations.
Following Kushinagar, Sarnath attracted approximately one lakh foreign visitors, while other significant destinations including Kapilvastu, Sravasti, Kaushambi and Sankisa accounted for the remaining international tourist traffic.
Geographical Distribution and Seasonal Patterns
Tourism officials tracking visitor trends have identified clear patterns in the geographical origins of international pilgrims. Thailand contributes the largest share at roughly 30–35% of total arrivals, followed by Sri Lanka (20–25%) and Japan (10–15%). Visitors from Myanmar, Taiwan and South Korea constitute much of the remaining segment.
