Uttar Pradesh Tourism Launches Dual Heritage Campaigns for World Heritage Week 2026
In a significant move to celebrate World Heritage Week 2026, leading up to World Heritage Day on April 18, the Uttar Pradesh Tourism Department has unveiled two innovative citizen-centric campaigns: 'Heritage Through My Lens' and 'Share Your Personal Treasure'. These initiatives represent a strategic effort to democratize heritage documentation and foster wider public engagement with the state's rich cultural legacy.
Campaign Details and Objectives
The tourism department has formally invited citizens across all age groups to actively participate in documenting and celebrating tangible heritage through these dual programs. The campaigns are designed to be highly inclusive, targeting diverse demographics including students, families, young creators, homemakers, and local community members. By encouraging visual storytelling and personal narratives, Uttar Pradesh Tourism aims to bring heritage closer to people's daily lives and stimulate broader public involvement in cultural preservation.
'UP Heritage Through My Lens': Capturing Hidden Gems
The first initiative, 'UP Heritage Through My Lens', specifically encourages participants to document lesser-known or hidden heritage sites through photographs and short video reels. Acceptable submissions may encompass:
- Local temples and shrines with cultural significance
- Ancient stepwells and traditional water structures
- Historic market streets and commercial areas
- Lesser-documented forts and architectural sites
Tourism and Culture Minister Jaiveer Singh emphasized the campaign's philosophical foundation, stating: "World Heritage Week is not only about celebrating monuments but about recognizing the deeper cultural fabric that defines us. Through these initiatives, we want people, especially the younger generation, to engage with heritage in their own way and take pride in their roots."
Participants are encouraged to use simple mobile photography or video formats, focusing on architectural details, cultural rituals, or everyday life surrounding these heritage sites, ensuring accessibility and ease of participation for all.
'Share Your Personal Treasure': Celebrating Family Heritage
Complementing the visual documentation campaign is 'Share Your Personal Treasure', which invites participants to submit tangible objects of personal or family significance accompanied by short written narratives. This initiative highlights the deeply personal dimension of heritage, making cultural preservation particularly relatable for families and elders.
Acceptable entries for this category include:
- Historical coins and currency
- Handwritten letters and documents
- Traditional jewelry and adornments
- Heirloom utensils and household items
- Vintage photographs and family memorabilia
Together, both campaigns significantly broaden the conventional definition of heritage beyond well-known landmarks, incorporating local histories, community narratives, and personal family legacies into the state's cultural preservation efforts.
Shift Toward Participatory Tourism
Additional Chief Secretary for Tourism, Culture and Religious Affairs Amrit Abhijat highlighted that these initiatives reflect a strategic shift toward participatory tourism models, where citizens actively contribute to documenting and presenting heritage. He noted that such community-driven efforts can help identify culturally significant places and traditions with strong local relevance, which may gradually be integrated into Uttar Pradesh's broader tourism landscape and promotional strategies.
Participation Guidelines and Recognition
Participants can submit entries in the form of photographs or short videos, adhering to defined formats to ensure authenticity and cultural relevance. For the 'Personal Treasure' category, a brief written account must accompany each physical object submission.
Top entries across both campaigns stand to win special prizes and recognition. Selected submissions from the 'Personal Treasure' category will receive additional visibility through exhibition at the State Museum and acknowledgment at state-level cultural platforms.
The submission deadline for both campaigns is April 18, 2026. Interested participants can register and submit entries through the official Uttar Pradesh Tourism website, with detailed guidelines available for both individual and group participation.
