Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced that the central government would address the protests in Bangladesh regarding the "pushback" of alleged illegal immigrants. This statement came after reports surfaced that Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami MP Golam Sarwar Bhuyian had requested a parliamentary discussion on the matter.
Adhikari's Remarks at Press Conference
Speaking to reporters during a press conference marking 12 years of the NDA government, Adhikari stated, "I cannot comment on foreign policy matters. Bangladesh shares borders with five states. Only the Ministry of External Affairs may comment." He emphasized that the issue falls under the purview of the central government.
Background of the Issue
Reports in Bangladeshi media indicate that the country's parliament may take up the issue of India's "push back" of allegedly undocumented Bangladeshi and Myanmar nationals on Monday. Adhikari had previously stated that the Bengal police would apprehend illegal immigrants and hand them over to the Border Security Force (BSF), which would then oversee their deportation.
United Nations Expresses Concern
Meanwhile, the United Nations in Bangladesh has raised concerns and stated that it is closely monitoring reports of incidents along the India-Bangladesh border. The UN emphasized the importance of adhering to international norms regarding the treatment of migrants and refugees.
