Ahmedabad's Infrastructure Overhaul for Global Sporting Events
Ahmedabad is embarking on a transformative infrastructure journey as it prepares to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games and potentially the 2036 Olympic Games. The city's civic authorities are moving forward with ambitious plans to upgrade sports facilities and transportation networks to meet international standards.
Major Road Widening Project Approved
The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation's standing committee has recently given the green light to a significant road widening project that will dramatically expand access to the Narendra Modi Stadium. Currently, the 18.28-meter wide road connecting the Sabarmati toll plaza to the stadium will be expanded to an impressive 61 meters over a 500-meter stretch.
This expansion will require the acquisition of land from multiple government and private entities. Specifically, the project will affect two ONGC-owned plots and two privately owned plots on the north side of the road, along with four privately owned plots and four government-owned plots on the south side.
Compensation Framework for Affected Landowners
An anonymous AMC official explained the compensation process for those impacted by the land acquisition. "According to AMC's policy, legal land or property owners affected will be offered three options as compensation: FSI, TDR, or compensation based on the jantri," the official stated. "Additionally, alternative arrangements will be provided for affected houses."
The proposal to widen this crucial access road was initially suggested when Ahmedabad's development plan was approved in December 2014, but has only now received formal approval for implementation.
Comprehensive Sports Enclave Development
Beyond the road improvements, the city is developing the massive 650-acre Sardar Patel Sports Enclave around the Narendra Modi Stadium. This ambitious project is being executed in two packages with a total budget of Rs 5,050 crore and is scheduled for completion by December 2028.
Package 1, estimated at Rs 2,250 crore, will include a state-of-the-art aquatics center designed to host international competitions.
Package 2, with an estimated cost of Rs 2,800 crore, will feature an indoor arena, a tennis center, the National Institute of Sports Excellence, and dedicated housing facilities for athletes.
Multi-Agency Coordination for Project Success
The state government, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, and the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority are currently in the final stages of the land acquisition and clearance process. This coordinated effort demonstrates the comprehensive approach being taken to ensure the city's infrastructure is ready to welcome athletes and visitors from around the world for these prestigious sporting events.
The road widening project represents just one component of Ahmedabad's broader strategy to position itself as a world-class host city capable of accommodating large-scale international sporting competitions while leaving a lasting legacy of improved urban infrastructure for its residents.
