In a significant leadership change, the Indian Air Force's crucial Maintenance Command has a new head. Air Marshal Yalla Umesh officially took over as the 39th Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the command on Monday, based in Nagpur.
A Distinguished Career in Aeronautical Engineering
Commissioned into the Aeronautical Engineering (Mechanical) Branch of the IAF, Air Marshal Umesh's career is a testament to expertise and leadership. He is a highly qualified 'Cat A' aeronautical engineer who also holds a Doctorate in Management. His academic credentials include being an alumnus of the prestigious College of Defence Management and the National Defence College.
His service portfolio is both diverse and impressive, spanning across the IAF's major combat, transport, and specialist aircraft fleets. He has tackled complex engineering and command roles throughout his tenure.
Key Appointments and International Experience
Before this top appointment, Air Marshal Umesh served as the Director General (Aircraft) at Air Headquarters. His previous key positions include:
- Assistant Chief of the Air Staff (Engineering)
- Air Commodore Engineering (Transport)
- Air Officer Commanding of a Guided Weapon Base Repair Depot
- Chief Engineering Officer at a United Nations-operated airfield in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
His contributions to the nation have been recognized with the award of the Vishisht Seva Medal.

Air Marshal Umesh succeeds Air Marshal Vijay Kumar Garg, who superannuated on November 30 after an illustrious 39 years of service to the nation. The change of command marks a new chapter for the Maintenance Command, which is responsible for the entire maintenance and repair ecosystem of the IAF, ensuring operational readiness of all aircraft and systems.
