Assam Rail Passengers Association Calls for Suburban Rail Network in Guwahati Region
With Assam's railway infrastructure now almost entirely electrified, enabling efficient Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) train operations, the Assam Rail Passengers Association (ARPA) has made a formal appeal to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. The association is urging the immediate introduction of electric suburban rail services in and around Guwahati to address the pressing transportation needs of the region.
Daily Commuter Struggles Highlighted
Thousands of daily commuters from surrounding towns including Bongaigaon, Barpeta Road, Nalbari, Rangiya, Nagaon, Jagiroad, and Goalpara travel significant distances ranging from 50 to 150 kilometers to reach Guwahati. Their journeys are primarily for work, education, healthcare, and various office-related requirements that the city provides as the northeastern region's primary hub.
ARPA General Secretary Dipankar Sharma emphasized on Saturday that without reliable rail connectivity, these commuters are forced to depend exclusively on road transportation. This often involves grueling three to five-hour journeys that are frequently disrupted by poor road conditions, seasonal monsoon floods, and traffic accidents. The cumulative effect results in daily hardship and substantial loss of productive time for the working population.
Formal Letter Outlines Critical Need
In a detailed letter addressed to Minister Vaishnaw, Sharma articulated the association's position clearly. "As the gateway to the northeast, Guwahati serves as the economic, educational and healthcare hub for millions across the region," he wrote. "However, in the absence of dedicated suburban rail services, thousands of daily commuters from surrounding districts of Guwahati city have been left in a state of perpetual struggle."
The letter further explained that commuters are currently forced to rely on overcrowded buses, expensively priced taxis, or private vehicles amid worsening traffic congestion and rising fuel costs. This transportation crisis not only erodes hard-earned livelihoods but also significantly hampers the region's overall development trajectory.
"Hence we urge introduction of frequent, affordable EMU/MEMU (Mainline EMU) suburban trains to bridge this critical gap," Sharma concluded in his appeal to the railway ministry.
Educational and Economic Implications
The absence of suburban train services has created particular challenges for students attending Gauhati University, its numerous affiliated colleges, and other higher educational institutions in the area. Many students from economically weaker backgrounds are compelled to stay in hostels or rented accommodations that they often cannot afford, simply because daily commuting via existing transportation options is impractical or prohibitively expensive.
Sharma noted that while existing passenger trains offer some connectivity, their limited frequency and inconvenient timings fail to meet peak-hour demands. This leaves commuters stranded or forces them to opt for costlier alternatives that strain their financial resources.
Broader Benefits of Suburban Rail Network
ARPA emphasized that suburban rail services represent more than mere convenience—they constitute an essential lifeline for the region's development. The association's letter outlined multiple benefits that such a network would provide beyond individual commuter relief.
"Suburban rails could decongest NH-27, NH-37 and NH-15, reduce carbon emissions, and unlock opportunities in sectors like tea trading, agro-processing and IT services," the communication read. This infrastructure development would thus serve both environmental and economic purposes while addressing the immediate transportation crisis facing daily commuters.
The appeal comes at a strategic moment when Assam's rail electrification has reached near-completion, creating the necessary technical foundation for implementing EMU-based suburban services. The association's request highlights how infrastructure development must be matched with service implementation to truly benefit the population it is designed to serve.
