BJP MP Ashok Chavan Urges Central Approval for Nanded-Latur Railway Line
BJP Rajya Sabha member Ashok Chavan has made a strong appeal to the central government, urging immediate approval for the proposed Nanded–Latur railway line. Speaking during the Zero Hour in the Rajya Sabha on Monday, Chavan emphasized that this project represents a crucial "missing rail link" that would seamlessly connect the regions of Vidarbha, Marathwada, and western Maharashtra.
A Vital Corridor for Regional Integration
Chavan clarified that the proposed direct rail line is not merely a project linking two districts but serves as an important corridor that would integrate three key regions of Maharashtra. He pointed out that Nanded and Latur are major agricultural and trade centres in Marathwada, yet there is currently no direct railway link between these two cities.
The former Maharashtra chief minister detailed the current travel challenges, noting that trains currently take a circuitous route of approximately 212 kilometers, requiring nearly six hours to travel between Nanded and Latur. In contrast, the road distance is around 144 kilometers. The proposed 104-kilometer direct rail line would dramatically cut the travel time to nearly one hour and fifteen minutes, offering a significant improvement in efficiency and convenience.
Wider Benefits for Passengers and Economy
Highlighting the broader significance of the project, Chavan explained that the completion of this link would reduce the rail distance between Nagpur and Miraj from 991 kilometers to 807 kilometers—a substantial reduction of around 184 kilometers. "This will directly benefit passengers travelling from Vidarbha and neighbouring states, such as Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh, towards the western coastline," he stated, underscoring the project's potential to enhance connectivity across state borders.
Chavan also revealed that the Maharashtra government has agreed to bear 50% of the project cost, demonstrating a strong commitment to regional development. He confirmed that the final location survey has been completed, and the proposal is currently pending with the Union railway ministry.
Call for Accelerated Approval
In his appeal, Chavan urged the Centre to grant early approval to the project to accelerate regional connectivity and economic development. He stressed that timely action is essential to unlock the full potential of this infrastructure initiative, which promises to boost trade, agriculture, and passenger mobility in the region.
The push for this railway line comes as part of ongoing efforts to improve transportation networks in Maharashtra, addressing long-standing gaps in rail connectivity that have hindered economic growth and accessibility.
