Assam CM: Normal India-China Ties Key to Growth

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday stated that the state's economic progress is closely linked to normal relations between India and China. Speaking at the state BJP headquarters on the completion of 12 years of the Narendra Modi-led NDA government, Sarma asserted that no force could hinder Assam's growth if bilateral ties normalize and China recognizes Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh as an integral part of India.

Peaceful Ties Essential for Northeast Progress

Sarma emphasized that peaceful and cordial relations with neighboring countries are crucial for the development of the northeast region. He envisioned a brighter future for Assam once India-China relations are normalized, particularly if China acknowledges Tawang as Indian territory. "Once Tawang, Arunachal, is declared as a territory of India (by China), then who will stop Assam?" he asked.

Free Movement and Infrastructure Boost

The Assam CM highlighted that enabling free movement of vehicles up to Tibet would further accelerate the state's prosperity. He also pointed out that normalizing relations with Bangladesh and Myanmar could make Assam unstoppable. Additionally, Sarma noted that the historic Stilwell Road, which connects eastern Assam to China through Myanmar, could be rebuilt swiftly to advance the state's economic ambitions.

Strategic Development in Arunachal Pradesh

Sarma acknowledged ongoing developmental activities in Arunachal Pradesh as part of strategic thinking. He remarked that failing to develop Arunachal would leave Assam vulnerable, and any infrastructure development there benefits Assam. "Our suggestion before the demography committee will be to scrutinize very closely every family living along the border areas," Sarma said, adding that demographic changes in border regions are a matter of concern.

His comments come weeks ahead of a possible visit by the Japanese Prime Minister for a summit in July. Sarma reiterated that if relations with Bangladesh and Myanmar improve, Assam's growth trajectory would become unstoppable.
