Bhilwara MP Pushes for Hamirgarh Airstrip and Air Connectivity

Bhilwara MP Advocates for Hamirgarh Airstrip Development and Air Connectivity

In a significant push for regional infrastructure, Bhilwara MP Damodar Agrawal has formally demanded the development of the Hamirgarh airstrip and the launch of regular air services from Bhilwara city. The demand was raised during the Zero Hour session of the Lok Sabha on Thursday, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced air connectivity in the region.

Focus on Regional Connectivity Scheme (UDAN)

Agrawal emphasized that the commencement of air services should be executed under the Regional Connectivity Scheme (UDAN), a government initiative designed to make air travel more affordable and accessible. He specifically called for flights to major metropolitan hubs including Delhi, Mumbai, and Ahmedabad, which would provide critical links for business and tourism.

Economic and Social Benefits

The MP outlined several key advantages of developing the Hamirgarh airstrip on Chittorgarh Road:

  • Boost to Industrial and Commercial Activities: Enhanced air connectivity is expected to spur growth in Bhilwara's industrial and commercial sectors, attracting investments and creating job opportunities.
  • Tourism Development: Improved access would promote tourism in Bhilwara and surrounding areas, leveraging local cultural and historical attractions.
  • Affordable Air Travel: The UDAN scheme aims to make air travel cost-effective for the common public, thereby democratizing air transport and fostering regional development.

Challenges and Government Stance

Despite the clear benefits, Agrawal noted that no airline company has shown interest in starting services from Hamirgarh so far, even though the process has been initiated multiple times. He clarified that the government is in favour of launching flight services to various cities, but the lack of airline participation remains a hurdle.

This initiative is seen as a major step towards regional development, aiming to transform Bhilwara into a more connected and economically vibrant hub. The MP's advocacy underscores the growing demand for better air facilities in non-metro regions, aligning with national goals of inclusive growth under schemes like UDAN.
