Centre's Decision to Revoke Wangchuk's NSA Detention Welcomed in Ladakh and Jammu & Kashmir

Leaders across Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir have expressed widespread approval following the Union government's announcement to revoke the detention of prominent climate activist Sonam Wangchuk under the National Security Act. The decision, effective immediately, comes nearly six months after Wangchuk was arrested on September 26, 2025.

Ladakh Leaders Hail the Move as a Victory for the People

In Ladakh, key political groups engaged in talks with the Centre, including the Leh Apex Body (LAB) and the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), have welcomed the revocation. Cherring Dorjay Lakruk, co-chairman of LAB, described the decision as a significant victory for the people of Ladakh. He emphasized that the allegations against Wangchuk, including being labeled anti-national, were unfounded and that this move vindicates both the activist and the local populace. Lakruk further stated that this development would energize the ongoing movement for Ladakh's rights, underscoring that the struggle will persist.

Sajjad Kargili, a leader from KDA, also welcomed the revocation but stressed that the fight for Ladakh's legitimate rights, such as statehood and constitutional safeguards under the Sixth Schedule, must continue. He additionally called for the immediate release of two individuals detained in connection with last year's violence.

Ladakh MP Mohamad Hanifa echoed these sentiments, urging the government to address the region's demands for statehood and constitutional protection. Meanwhile, Tashi Gyalson, a BJP leader and former Chief Executive Councillor of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council Leh, viewed the step as reflective of the government's positive intent to promote peace, stability, and mutual understanding in the region. He expressed optimism that this decision would pave the way for dialogue to safeguard the interests and aspirations of Ladakh's people.

Jammu and Kashmir Political Figures Applaud the Revocation

In Jammu and Kashmir, political leaders have similarly welcomed the Centre's decision. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah criticized the initial detention, stating that Wangchuk should never have been arrested, especially under the NSA. He highlighted the importance of fulfilling promises made to Ladakh. Mehbooba Mufti, President of the Peoples Democratic Party, also condemned the use of the NSA against Wangchuk, noting his significant contributions to environmental causes and deeming his prolonged incarceration unjust.

The Awami Ittehad Party, associated with jailed MP Engineer Rashid, described the revocation as a compassionate step that underscores humanitarian considerations in governance. The party further called for immediate attention to Engineer Rashid's case, emphasizing the need for justice and dialogue.

Lt Governor Stresses Dialogue Over Agitation

Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena welcomed the revocation, labeling it a positive step toward fostering an environment of peace, harmony, stability, and mutual trust in the region. He asserted that all concerns and issues can be resolved through constructive dialogue and mutual understanding. However, Saxena firmly stated that there is no place for agitation, bandhs, or violence in Ladakh, advocating instead for cooperation and peaceful engagement to achieve lasting solutions.

This development marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing discourse surrounding civil liberties and regional rights in Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir, with leaders urging continued efforts toward dialogue and fulfillment of longstanding demands.
