China Rejects Reports of Weapon Supplies to Iran as 'Baseless Smears'

China has strongly denied allegations that it is supplying or planning to supply weapons to Iran, dismissing such reports as "baseless smears." This response comes amid concerns raised by US intelligence assessments regarding potential military transfers between the two nations.

US Intelligence Raises Alarms Over Air Defense Systems

According to a report by CNN, US intelligence assessments indicate that China is preparing to deliver new air defense systems to Iran within the next few weeks. The systems in question are shoulder-fired anti-air missiles, known as MANPADS, which can pose a serious threat to low-flying military aircraft. The report suggests that China may be attempting to route these shipments through third countries to conceal their origin, adding a layer of complexity to the situation.

China's Official Response and Stance

In a news briefing, foreign ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun addressed the reports, stating, "China has always adopted a cautious and responsible attitude towards the export of military items, implementing strict controls in accordance with its own export control laws and regulations and its international obligations. We oppose baseless smears or malicious association." This statement underscores China's commitment to adhering to legal frameworks and international norms in its military exports.

US President Trump Issues Tariff Warning

Amid these developments, US President Donald Trump has issued a stark warning to China. In an interview with Fox News, he expressed skepticism about the reports but reiterated a threat of "staggering" new tariffs if China provides military assistance to Iran. Trump stated, "I've heard reports, and I don’t always trust news reports, claiming that China is giving shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missiles. I’m not sure that’s accurate. I doubt they would do that because I have a relationship and I think they wouldn't do that, but maybe they did a little bit at the beginning, but I don't think they would anymore." He further warned, "If we catch them doing that, they get a 50 percent tariff, which is a staggering, that's a staggering amount."

China's Role in Brokering Ceasefire Efforts

In a related context, China has also highlighted its efforts to support the brokering of a fragile ceasefire between the US and Iran. This diplomatic involvement adds another dimension to the complex geopolitical dynamics at play, suggesting that China is engaged in multiple facets of the US-Iran relationship beyond military matters.

The situation remains tense as both nations navigate these allegations and threats, with potential implications for international trade and security. The ongoing dialogue and intelligence reports will likely continue to shape the narrative in the coming weeks.
