Chinese Ambassador to India Rejects US Narrative, Highlights Self-Made Development
In a pointed address on Thursday, Chinese Ambassador to India Xu Feihong took a subtle jab at the United States, emphasizing that the remarkable progress achieved by both India and China is a product of their own citizens' diligence and intellect, rather than any external benevolence. His remarks appeared to counter recent statements from US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau, who suggested Washington would avoid repeating past mistakes with China in its dealings with India.
Context of Diplomatic Tensions
The ambassador's comments were delivered during the India-China youth dialogue, where he underscored the importance of win-win cooperation between the two Asian giants. This comes after Landau's assertion that the US would not allow India to become a rival like China, to which Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar responded by declaring that India's ascent is determined solely by its own actions, not by the errors of others.
Xu Feihong articulated, "In recent decades, both China and India have achieved remarkable development. These achievements are built on the hard work and wisdom of our own people, supported by global cooperation, and are by no means the result of others' generosity." He further added that both nations are at a pivotal juncture of development and national rejuvenation, advocating for self-reliance coupled with mutual support.
Challenges to Bilateral Harmony
The ambassador also addressed external influences that seek to disrupt Sino-Indian relations. He noted, "While India and China are neighbours that cannot be moved apart, some people were unwilling to see the two countries live in harmony. They deliberately amplify our differences, hype up the so-called China threat, and hope to profit from discord between our two countries." Xu urged the youth to think independently and break free from information bubbles to foster a more objective understanding between the peoples of both countries.
Global South Leadership and International Order
In his speech, Xu highlighted the rising trends of unilateralism, protectionism, and hegemonism in a world marked by transformation and turbulence, which he said severely undermine the existing international order. He called for strengthened communication and coordination between China and India as key members of the Global South. "As important members of the Global South, China and India should strengthen communication and coordination, jointly safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of developing countries, and lead the Global South toward greater development," he asserted.
This dialogue underscores the ongoing diplomatic maneuvering in the region, with China positioning itself as a partner in development while subtly critiquing Western influences. The emphasis on self-reliance and bilateral cooperation reflects broader geopolitical strategies as both nations navigate their roles on the global stage.
