Syro-Malabar Church Spokesperson Rejects False Narratives on FCRA Amendment Protests

In a firm rebuttal, Syro-Malabar Church spokesperson Fr Tom Olikkarott has stated that there are deliberate attempts to misconstrue the ongoing protests by Christian communities against the proposed Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) amendment bill by falsely linking them to financial accounts. Speaking through an official video posted on the Church's platforms, Fr Olikkarott emphasized that the objections are rooted in constitutional concerns, not financial secrecy.

Existing FCRA Monitoring System Already Stringent

Fr Olikkarott highlighted that even under the 2010 FCRA, there is a rigorous monitoring framework in place for accounts of voluntary organizations receiving foreign contributions. "Before December 31 each year, all such organizations must file annual returns, accompanied by an official audit report from a chartered accountant, approved accounts, and a list of office-bearers," he explained. He added that any discrepancies found in these accounts can lead to the cancellation of the FCRA licence, underscoring the strict compliance required.

Transparent Financial Practices of the Church

The spokesperson detailed the Church's financial operations, noting that foreign contributions are primarily sourced from priests working abroad and faithful residing overseas. All these funds are received through a designated State Bank of India account in Delhi, as mandated by the 2010 Act, and expenditures are also processed through accounts, ensuring full transparency. Fr Olikkarott asserted that with such a robust monitoring system already active, insinuations that protests stem from a desire to hide account records are baseless.

Allegations of Political Motives Behind False Reports

Fr Olikkarott accused certain entities of spreading misinformation to undermine the Church's objections. "There is a clear political bad intention behind such reports," he stated, suggesting that when serious issues like constitutional violations are raised, false narratives are crafted to neutralize dissent and silence the Church. He urged the public to recognize these tactics and focus on the substantive concerns regarding the FCRA amendment.
