CIDCO to Anchor Major 20-Acre Global Trade and Diplomacy Hub in Kharghar
Mumbai's City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) is set to develop a transformative 20-acre global trade and diplomacy hub in Kharghar, Navi Mumbai. This ambitious project, part of the proposed Africa India International Development Zone (AIIDZ) within the International Corporate Park, aims to create a flagship business district inspired by models like the Dubai World Trade Centre.
Strategic Location and Comprehensive Facilities
The self-contained campus will be strategically positioned near the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport and Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), providing direct access to global trade routes. The development will feature a range of world-class facilities designed to support international business and diplomatic activities year-round.
Key components of the hub include:
- Multiple hotels and serviced apartments for international delegates
- A state-of-the-art 6,000-seat convention centre
- 2.5 lakh square feet of exhibition space
- Retail outlets and comprehensive delegate facilities
- A landmark Bio Dome for cultural and innovation exchanges
Permanent Diplomatic and Commercial Presence
At the heart of the development will stand a central business tower offering permanent office spaces for all 54 African nations, alongside Indian public and private sector institutions. This arrangement is designed to establish a lasting diplomatic and commercial footprint in Navi Mumbai, facilitating continuous engagement between India and African countries.
The convention complex, centered around the 6,000-capacity auditorium, is projected to host international events for more than 250 days annually. The proposed Africa-India Bio Dome will serve as a signature space dedicated to cultural exchanges, environmental initiatives, and innovation collaborations between the two regions.
Implementation Structure and Timeline
The project will be executed through a special purpose vehicle with distinct ownership stakes. The Africa India Economic Foundation (AIEF) will hold a 74% share, while CIDCO will maintain a 26% stake in the venture. CIDCO has already submitted the land disposal proposal to the Maharashtra state government, formally initiating the development of the International Corporate Park.
The AIIDZ is expected to become fully operational within six to eight years, with projected revenues reaching USD 30 million by the sixth year of operation. This development reinforces the Mumbai Metropolitan Region's strategic ambitions to position itself as the economic anchor of the Global South.
Leadership Perspectives on the Project
CIDCO Vice Chairman and Managing Director Vijay Singhal emphasized that the project is envisioned as a comprehensive platform connecting "markets, ideas, innovation and people." He highlighted its potential to create a dynamic ecosystem for shared growth while positioning Maharashtra as a gateway for the Global South.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis stated that this dedicated ecosystem for trade, investment, and institutional collaboration would significantly deepen economic ties with African nations. He noted that it would open new avenues for growth, job creation, and global partnerships that benefit both regions.
Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde pointed to the integrated facilities and strategic Mumbai Metropolitan Region location as key advantages that would enable seamless stakeholder interaction and accelerate trade and investment flows between India and Africa.
Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar added that the Africa India Business Centre would act as a powerful catalyst for economic growth by boosting Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), generating substantial employment opportunities, and attracting global investments to the region.
This development represents a significant step in strengthening India-Africa relations while enhancing Mumbai's position as a global business destination.
