Dinesh Trivedi Appointed High Commissioner to Bangladesh

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on April 27, 2026, announced the appointment of Dinesh Trivedi as the next High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh. Trivedi, a seasoned politician and former Union Minister, will succeed Pranay Verma, who is completing his tenure in Dhaka.

Diplomatic Career and Background

Dinesh Trivedi, 68, is a prominent leader from the Trinamool Congress party and has served as India's Minister of Railways from 2011 to 2012. He has also held various parliamentary positions, including being a member of the Rajya Sabha. His appointment is seen as a move to strengthen bilateral ties between India and Bangladesh, given his political experience and understanding of the region.

Strategic Importance of Bangladesh

The appointment comes at a crucial time when both nations are focusing on enhancing cooperation in trade, connectivity, energy, and security. India and Bangladesh share a 4,096 km border and have historically maintained close cultural and economic links. The new High Commissioner is expected to play a key role in advancing mutual interests, particularly in areas such as water sharing, border management, and counter-terrorism.

His tenure saw several milestones, including the signing of the interim water-sharing agreement for the Kushiyara River and progress on the Teesta water-sharing deal. Trivedi will take charge after Verma's departure later this year.

The MEA statement highlighted Trivedi's extensive experience in public service and his deep understanding of Bangladesh-India relations. It also expressed confidence that he will further strengthen the friendship and cooperation between the two countries.

This appointment underscores India's commitment to its Neighbourhood First policy and the broader vision of regional stability and prosperity in South Asia.
