In a significant diplomatic development, BJP leader and former Union minister Dinesh Trivedi is likely to be appointed as India's next High Commissioner to Bangladesh. If confirmed, this would represent a rare instance of a political figure being appointed to an ambassadorial position. Trivedi, who hails from West Bengal - a state that shares a border with Bangladesh - brings unique regional understanding to this critical diplomatic role.
The vacancy emerged after Pranay Verma, who had been serving as India's High Commissioner to Bangladesh since September 2022, was appointed on Friday as the next Ambassador to Belgium and the European Union. Verma, a 1994-batch diplomat, had been overseeing India-Bangladesh relations during a particularly challenging period.
Strategic Timing Amid Bilateral Reset Efforts
Reports indicate that New Delhi has been actively considering appointing a political personality to this key diplomatic position in Dhaka. This move comes amid concerted efforts to reset bilateral relations following significant political changes in Bangladesh.
The formation of a new government led by Bangladesh Nationalist Party chief Tarique Rahman in February 2024 marked a major political shift. India-Bangladesh relations had experienced a substantial downturn under the interim government headed by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, which assumed charge after the collapse of the Sheikh Hasina government in August 2024 following student-led protests.
Trivedi's Political Journey and Experience
Dinesh Trivedi, 75, brings considerable political experience to this potential diplomatic role:
- Served as Railway Minister and Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare during the Congress-led UPA government as a member of the Trinamool Congress (TMC)
- Elected to the Rajya Sabha from West Bengal
- Served as a Lok Sabha MP from Barrackpore
- Quit the TMC in February 2021 and joined the BJP, which has been the country's ruling party since May 2014

While there has been no formal announcement from the government, BJP IT cell head and West Bengal co-incharge Amit Malviya posted a congratulatory message for Trivedi on social media platform X.
"Congratulations to Shri Dinesh Trivedi, senior BJP leader, former Union Minister and Barrackpore MP, for being appointed as India's High Commissioner to Bangladesh," Malviya wrote, suggesting the appointment is imminent.
