East Central Railway Implements Summer Safety Measures Amid Rising Temperatures
Patna: With temperatures rising sharply across the region, the Danapur division of the East Central Railway (ECR) has initiated comprehensive precautionary measures to ensure safe and uninterrupted train operations during the peak summer months. According to Danapur senior divisional commercial manager Abhinav Siddarth, these actions follow recent directives issued by the Railway Board to all zonal railways and principal chief engineers.
Zero Tolerance Approach to Weather-Related Incidents
The Danapur division, which handles approximately 260 to 280 passenger trains daily across six key routes, has adopted a strict "zero tolerance" approach towards weather-related incidents. The critical routes include DDU–Patna–Jhajha, Patna–Gaya, Kiul–Gaya, Fatuha–Islampur, Bakhtiyarpur–Rajgir, and Dildarnagar–Tarighat. This strategic preparation aims to tackle extreme heat conditions effectively and maintain operational integrity.
Key Safety Measures Implemented
As part of the proactive measures, hot weather patrolling has been introduced on all vulnerable routes to monitor track conditions continuously. Intensive summer counseling sessions have also been launched for key personnel, including loco pilots, station managers, keymen, and track patrol staff. These sessions focus on heat-related risks and enhancing operational vigilance to prevent potential mishaps.
Track Maintenance and Monitoring
Priority is being given to de-stressing faulty tracks, while continuous monitoring is underway to detect changes in track behavior caused by excessive heat. Railway officials have emphasized that tracks are highly susceptible to expansion and deformation at elevated temperatures, making close surveillance critical for safety. Additional safety personnel have been deployed for footplate inspections and regular checks at level crossing gates, horizontal and vertical curves, and areas with shrinkage-prone soil.
Infrastructure Maintenance Efforts
Push trolley inspections, along with mechanized and manual maintenance of track infrastructure, are being carried out to ensure optimal track conditions. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to maintain high operational standards despite challenging weather conditions. The Senior DCM stated that these proactive steps are aimed at preventing accidents and ensuring passenger safety throughout the summer season, reaffirming the Railways' commitment to reliability and security.
The implementation of these measures underscores the importance of adaptive strategies in response to climate challenges, particularly in critical infrastructure sectors like railways. By prioritizing safety and maintenance, the Danapur division aims to mitigate risks associated with extreme temperatures and uphold service continuity for thousands of daily passengers.
