Ramgarh Administration Initiates Eviction Drive at Chhinnamastika Temple
The Ramgarh administration has commenced a significant eviction drive around the Chhinnamastika Temple in Rajrappa, acting in compliance with a directive from the Jharkhand High Court. This operation, which began on Thursday and continued into Friday, aims to clear illegal constructions to facilitate a major beautification project intended to transform the site into a global tourist destination.
Court Order and Administrative Action
Following the High Court's order on April 1, the administration has taken swift action. The court had instructed tourism secretary Mukesh Kumar and Ramgarh deputy commissioner Faiz Aq Ahmed Mumtaz to conduct a detailed survey of the temple premises and submit a comprehensive beautification proposal. In response, authorities identified 254 illegal shops on the temple grounds and issued eviction notices to the occupants.
Ramgarh sub-divisional officer Anurag Kumar Tiwari stated, "We provided a deadline for voluntary evacuation by April 16 before officially launching the drive." Notices were initially served on March 25 by Chitarpur circle officer Deepak Minj, giving shopkeepers a one-month period to vacate the premises. Despite this, many structures remained, leading to the enforcement action.
Security and Demolition Efforts
The eviction drive has been conducted under heavy security deployment to ensure order and safety. So far, over 200 illegal constructions have been razed as part of the ongoing efforts. The operation underscores the administration's commitment to adhering to judicial mandates and advancing developmental projects in the region.
Shopkeepers' Concerns and Historical Context
Some shopkeepers have expressed dissatisfaction with the eviction process. Dilip Kumar Sao, who operates a hotel established by his father 70 years ago, highlighted that many vendors had deposited Rs 1,000 with authorities in 1996 for permission to set up outlets in the complex, which was originally developed by the administration. "We requested rehabilitation before eviction, but our pleas were not heard," he claimed, reflecting the challenges faced by long-standing businesses in the area.
Broader Tourism Development Initiative
The Chhinnamastika Temple, situated at the confluence of the Damodar and Bhairavi rivers, is a key focus of the state's tourism strategy. An official explained, "The temple is proposed to be developed as a global tourist destination, modeled after the Vaishno Devi shrine in Jammu & Kashmir." This project is part of a larger initiative by the tourism department to enhance five major destinations in Jharkhand, including Baba Baidyanath Dham in Deoghar, Parasnath Temple in Giridih, Bhadrakali Temple at Itkhori in Chatra, and Anjan Dham in Gumla.
The eviction drive represents a critical step in this beautification effort, aiming to improve infrastructure and attract visitors from around the world. As the administration continues its operations, the focus remains on balancing developmental goals with the concerns of local stakeholders to ensure a sustainable and inclusive approach to tourism growth.
