Former Pentagon Official Criticizes Pakistan's Military Credibility
A former Pentagon official has openly mocked Pakistan's military credibility, dismissing any meaningful role for Islamabad in potential US operations amid rising tensions surrounding the Iran conflict. Michael Rubin, speaking to ANI, described Pakistan as prone to exaggerating its capabilities, rating it "10 out of 10 in fantasy" when it comes to projecting military strength.
Diplomatic and Practical Challenges
Rubin addressed the possibility of Pakistan offering ground support to the United States, stating that such a move was unlikely both diplomatically and practically. "For diplomatic reasons, I don't see the Pakistanis doing anything, and frankly, the Pakistanis don't have the capability," he said. He added that Pakistan has a consistent pattern of "bragging about capabilities they don't have," undermining its reliability in international affairs.
Gulf Frustrations and Defense Agreements
The former official also pointed to growing frustration in the Gulf region, claiming that Saudi Arabia is disappointed with Pakistan despite a recently signed mutual defense agreement. Rubin dismissed this pact outright, saying it made "about as much sense as making a military alliance with Papua New Guinea." These remarks highlight skepticism in some US policy circles about Islamabad's dependability as a strategic partner.
Pakistan's Mediation Efforts Amid Escalating Crisis
Rubin's comments come as Pakistan attempts to position itself as a mediator in the escalating crisis between Iran and the United States. Iran's ambassador to Pakistan, Reza Amiri Moghadam, noted that efforts to halt the war are approaching a "critical" and "sensitive" stage, though he provided no specific details on these diplomatic initiatives.
Ground Escalation and Ultimatums
The diplomatic push coincides with a sharp escalation on the ground. Donald Trump has issued an ultimatum demanding Iran reopen the Strait of Hormuz or face sweeping attacks on its infrastructure. He warned of the "complete demolition" of key facilities, including power plants and bridges, within hours if Tehran fails to comply.
Iran's Response and Regional Strikes
Iran has firmly rejected this threat, with its military leadership calling Trump's remarks "delusional" and vowing to continue operations against US and Israeli forces. Fresh exchanges of strikes have been reported, with Israel targeting sites in Tehran and Iran launching missiles towards Israeli territory. In response, Gulf states have activated their air defenses to counter potential threats.
This situation underscores the complex geopolitical dynamics at play, with Pakistan's military credibility being questioned as global tensions rise.
