Sarita Yolmo Creates History as First Woman Senior CTC on Darjeeling Himalayan Railway
In a groundbreaking achievement, Sarita Yolmo, aged 55, has become the first woman senior commercial-cum-ticket collector (CTC) to serve on the Darjeeling Himalayan Railways (DHR), a UNESCO-recognized world heritage site, in its 145-year history. This milestone marks a significant departure from the railway's long-standing legacy, as highlighted by DHR director Rishab Choudhary.
Journey and Assignment Details
A resident of Sonada currently living in Dagapur, Siliguri, Yolmo joined the Indian Railways in 1991. She was assigned to take charge of the DHR on February 5, conducting the toy train from New Jalpaiguri (NJP) to Darjeeling. The next day, she returned to NJP from Darjeeling, followed by an uphill journey to Darjeeling on February 8 and a downhill journey to NJP on February 9. Yolmo anticipates being assigned the uphill route again next week.
Career Background and Initial Challenges
Yolmo initially worked in the press section at Kurseong. After the closure of the press unit in 2019, she was transferred to the commercial department at NJP as a senior CTC, where she handled enquiry services, announcements, and ticket-checking duties. Though she served on several mail and express trains over the years, this was her first assignment on the DHR.
Speaking from Barsoi Junction, Yolmo expressed feeling proud to break the long-standing gender barrier, despite initial excitement and nervousness. "Usually, there are multiple staff members on mail and express trains. But on the DHR, I was alone. I felt nervous and even scared initially. It is a hilly route with sharp curves, and the safety of many passengers depends on you," she said.
Personal Reflections and Family Connections
Yolmo described the opportunity as a proud and unforgettable moment, adding, "Being part of the DHR gives me immense pride as it is one of the most renowned heritage railways in the world." Her husband, Dawa Yolmo, was formerly a senior section engineer at the DHR workshop in Tindharia and later transferred to Siliguri Junction in the Civil and Works (CW) department, retiring a year ago.
This historic appointment not only celebrates Yolmo's dedication but also symbolizes progress in gender inclusivity within India's railway heritage, inspiring future generations in the industry.
