BJP Leader Raises Entry Tax Issue with Union Minister
The controversy over the entry tax imposed by the Himachal Pradesh Government on vehicles from other states has reached the Centre. BJP Ropar district president Ajayvir Singh Lalpura met Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways Harsh Malhotra in New Delhi to seek intervention.
During the meeting, Lalpura argued that the levy is not merely a taxation issue but one affecting the daily lives, trade, and economic interests of lakhs of people in Punjab and Himachal Pradesh. He highlighted that the two neighbouring states share long-standing social, commercial, and employment ties, and the additional tax places an unnecessary financial burden on commuters, traders, and transporters.
Daily Commuters and Traders Affected
Lalpura stated that thousands of people from Ropar, Nangal, and adjoining areas travel to Himachal Pradesh every day for employment, business, industrial work, education, and other essential purposes. He criticised the Congress government in Himachal Pradesh, alleging that the decision has created avoidable barriers between the people of the two states and is against the spirit of national unity, economic development, and seamless connectivity.
He appealed to the Centre to take up the matter in the larger public interest and ensure relief for commuters and businesses.
Union Minister's Assurance
According to Lalpura, Union Minister Harsh Malhotra assured him that the issue would be examined seriously as it is linked to public welfare. The minister said the Centre would make every possible effort to ensure a fair and appropriate resolution of the matter.
Background of the Entry Tax Controversy
The issue has remained a major political flashpoint in the border areas of Punjab and Himachal Pradesh for several months. The Himachal Pradesh Government had increased the entry tax on several categories of vehicles entering the state through its barrier check posts, triggering strong opposition from residents, traders, transporters, and industrialists in Punjab, particularly in the Nangal-Ropar region.
Following widespread protests and political pressure, the Himachal Government partially rolled back the hike for some vehicle categories. However, the levy continues to be opposed by political parties, trade bodies, and residents, who argue that charging an entry tax on vehicles using National Highways is against the principle of free movement and adversely affects interstate trade, tourism, and the daily commute of thousands of people.
Ongoing Protests and Demands
The controversy has also witnessed protests by various organisations, including demonstrations at the Himachal border and demands for the complete withdrawal of the levy. BJP leaders have consistently maintained that the tax undermines regional economic integration and have sought the intervention of the Central Government to resolve the issue.
