Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu flagged off a special vehicle on Monday. This vehicle carried precious chilgoza saplings as a gift from Himachal Pradesh to the Kingdom of Bhutan. The event marked a key moment in boosting the long-standing friendly ties between the two Himalayan regions.
Green Initiative Strengthens Bilateral Relations
The vehicle started its journey from the Himachal secretariat. This green initiative aims to foster environmental cooperation. Sukhu highlighted the shared Himalayan natural heritage between Himachal Pradesh and Bhutan. He said this makes forest conservation and biodiversity efforts especially meaningful.
Substantial Support for Bhutan
The state forest department will soon provide chilgoza seeds worth Rs 5 lakh to Bhutan. Additionally, Bhutanese forest officials will receive training on chilgoza cultivation. A delegation from Bhutan's forest department is expected to visit Himachal for this purpose.
Sukhu recalled that earlier, 50 kg of chilgoza seeds were already supplied to Bhutan. He emphasised the ecological importance of chilgoza. It is a rare and valuable species of the western Himalayas. Chilgoza is closely linked to biodiversity conservation and local livelihoods.
Empowering Local Communities
The chief minister stated that local women's groups would be actively involved in chilgoza-based activities. They will receive financial support to strengthen their livelihoods. This move aims to integrate community welfare with environmental efforts.
Forest Cover Growth in Himachal
Sukhu further noted the positive impact of sustained government efforts. Himachal Pradesh's forest cover increased by about 55 square kilometres. Extensive plantation work is being carried out under various forest conservation schemes.
This initiative not only gifts saplings but also shares knowledge and resources. It represents a collaborative step towards a greener future for both regions.
