IAF Launches Major Aerial Firefighting Operation in Arunachal Pradesh
The Indian Air Force (IAF) deployed helicopters in a critical mission to combat a spreading forest fire in the Mebo subdivision of Arunachal Pradesh's East Siang district. Over four intense days, the aerial operation saw more than 1.62 lakh litres of water dropped to contain the blaze, as confirmed by disaster management officials on Thursday.
Operation Details and Scale
Initiated on March 8 following an urgent request from the East Siang deputy commissioner, the firefighting effort targeted a fire that had engulfed approximately 140 hectares of reserve forest and an additional 200 hectares of community land and agricultural areas across Sigar, Ralling, and Mebo. Remarkably, no human casualties or livestock losses were reported throughout the incident.
The IAF conducted 54 precise shuttles, lifting water directly from the Siang river. The operation focused on dousing interior forest regions and protecting settlements near the Sigar military station, areas that were particularly vulnerable to the advancing flames.
Coordinated Ground and Aerial Efforts
On the ground, a multi-agency team worked tirelessly alongside the aerial campaign. This coalition included:
- Fire and emergency services personnel pooled from neighboring districts
- A specialized team from the Assam fire and emergency services
- State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) units
- Various government departments
- Aapda Mitras (community disaster volunteers)
- Local villagers led by traditional gaon buras (village heads)
This coordinated ground effort was instrumental in preventing the fire from spreading into residential settlement areas, creating a crucial defensive line.
Historical Context and Official Praise
This incident represents the second time in 2026 that Arunachal Pradesh has called upon the IAF for fire-dousing assistance, following a similar operation in Mepsoro during February. Disaster management SEOC assistant director S Tayang publicly praised the IAF for its "dedicated and effective effort" in containing the dangerous blaze.
Operation Conclusion and Ongoing Vigilance
On Thursday, the IAF helicopter services and other supporting agencies were formally de-requisitioned as firefighting operations were suspended. This decision came after heavy rainfall lashed East Siang district on Wednesday night, significantly aiding containment efforts.
However, authorities remain on high alert. Continuous monitoring is being conducted through drone surveillance and ground patrols to prevent any resurgence of fire or similar incidents in the future. The official emphasized that preparedness measures remain active despite the operational pause.
