India Participates as Observer in France-UK-Led Meeting on Strait of Hormuz
In a significant development, India was invited to a high-level meeting chaired by France and the United Kingdom, involving approximately 40 countries. This gathering focused on discussing a post-war mission aimed at restoring freedom of navigation in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. Notably, the United States was excluded from this particular initiative.
Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed India's participation ahead of the meeting, stating, "India has been invited to participate in this meeting, and I believe it is going to begin in a few hours. As for the level at which India will participate, we will inform you. We will also share details of the kind of discussions that take place there."
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri Represents India at Key Discussions
While official confirmation was pending, it is understood that Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri attended the meeting. Misri had previously represented India at another UK-chaired meeting earlier this month, which also addressed safe merchant shipping through the Hormuz Strait. This underscores India's proactive role in international maritime security efforts.
India has consistently advocated for peace and stability in the region. Earlier, India welcomed a two-week ceasefire between the US and Iran, expressing hope that it would lead to lasting peace and ensure the restoration of freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
France and UK Lead Coalition for Defensive Maritime Mission
France and the United Kingdom have been actively working to assemble a coalition, primarily comprising European countries, for a defensive mission. This initiative is designed to guarantee safe passage for ships through the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial energy waterway that facilitates global oil shipments.
The meeting coincided with Iran's announcement that the Strait had been temporarily opened, highlighting the timely nature of the discussions. India's involvement as an observer reflects its growing influence and strategic interests in maintaining maritime security and economic stability in key international waterways.
