India Co-Sponsors UN Resolution Condemning Iran's Attacks on GCC Nations

In a significant diplomatic move, India has co-sponsored a resolution at the United Nations Security Council that strongly condemns the "egregious" attacks by Iran against Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries and Jordan. The resolution, adopted on Wednesday, demands an immediate cessation of all such attacks by Tehran and denounces its threats to close the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

UN Security Council Vote and Global Support

The 15-nation Security Council, currently under the presidency of the United States, adopted the resolution with 13 votes in favour, none against, and abstentions from veto-wielding permanent members China and Russia. This outcome underscores broad international concern over Iran's actions in the region.

India joined over 130 nations in co-sponsoring the Bahrain-led resolution, reflecting a diverse coalition of countries. Notable co-sponsors include Australia, Austria, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Canada, Egypt, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Japan, Kuwait, Malaysia, Maldives, Myanmar, New Zealand, Norway, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Spain, Ukraine, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, the United States, Yemen, and Zambia.

India's Stance and Strategic Interests

The Ministry of External Affairs clarified India's position, stating that the country co-sponsored the GCC-led resolution as it aligns with its views on the issue. Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal emphasized that "we have 135 countries who have co-sponsored this particular resolution. The resolution reflects several of our positions... we have a large diaspora in GCC countries and their well-being and welfare is of utmost importance."

Jaiswal further highlighted the Gulf region's critical role in India's energy security needs, making regional stability a top priority. Without explicitly naming Iran, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had previously condemned attacks on all GCC countries, reinforcing India's commitment to peace in the area.

Resolution Details and International Law

The resolution reiterates strong support for the territorial integrity, sovereignty, and political independence of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Jordan. It condemns in the strongest terms Iran's attacks against these nations, determining that such acts constitute a breach of international law and pose a serious threat to international peace and security.

Key demands of the resolution include:

  • Immediate cessation of all attacks by Iran against GCC countries and Jordan.
  • Tehran must cease any provocation or threats to neighbouring states, including the use of proxies, "immediately and unconditionally."

This diplomatic action comes amid ongoing tensions, including reports of Saudi Arabia intercepting drones headed to the Shaybah oil field and Israeli strikes on Hezbollah targets in Beirut. Iran has also issued warnings to US tech firms like Google, Amazon, Microsoft, and Nvidia, while providing safe passage for Indian-flagged vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, contrasting with restrictions on US, European, and Israeli ships.

The resolution underscores the global community's call for de-escalation and adherence to international norms, with India playing a pivotal role in advocating for regional stability and the protection of its diaspora and energy interests.
