Jaishankar Urges Dialogue in Venezuela Crisis, Prioritises Safety of People
India Calls for Peace in Venezuela After Maduro's Capture

India has voiced significant concern over the escalating situation in Venezuela, calling for peaceful dialogue to ensure the safety and well-being of the nation's people. The statement comes in the wake of dramatic developments that saw the country's president captured in a foreign operation.

India's Stance: Safety of Venezuelans is Paramount

Speaking from Luxembourg on Tuesday, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar outlined India's position. He stressed that the primary focus for New Delhi is the welfare of the Venezuelan populace amidst the ongoing turmoil. Jaishankar referenced an official statement issued by India a day earlier, urging all involved parties to engage in constructive talks.

"We are concerned about the developments, but we would really urge all the parties involved to now sit down and come to a position which is in the interest of the well-being and safety of the people of Venezuela," Jaishankar stated. He added that India shares a long-standing and positive relationship with Venezuela and desires a favourable outcome for its people, regardless of how events unfold.

The Trigger: Capture of President Maduro

The crisis intensified over the weekend when Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were captured in Caracas. Reports indicate they were subsequently flown out of the country on Saturday. This operation was a joint effort involving intelligence agencies and US law enforcement, marking a significant escalation in international involvement in Venezuela's political affairs.

MEA Reiterates Call for Peace and Stability

Following these events, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in New Delhi released a formal statement. It described the recent developments as "a matter of deep concern" and confirmed that India is closely monitoring the fast-evolving situation. The MEA's communication echoed the minister's call for a peaceful resolution.

"We call upon all concerned to address issues peacefully through dialogue, ensuring peace and stability in the region," the statement read. It also provided crucial information for Indian nationals in Venezuela, confirming that the Embassy of India in Caracas is in touch with the Indian community and stands ready to offer all necessary assistance.

India's response underscores its diplomatic approach of advocating for dialogue and stability, while prioritising humanitarian concerns and the safety of its diaspora in regions affected by conflict.
