India continues to work with the United States on a sanctions waiver for the Chabahar port. This waiver is valid until April 26, 2026. The Ministry of External Affairs made this clear on Friday.
Government Addresses Reports of Possible Exit
Recent reports suggested India might leave the Chabahar port project due to US pressure. The government has now responded to these claims. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that India remains engaged with the US side.
He referred to a letter from the US Department of the Treasury. This letter outlined guidance on a conditional sanctions waiver. It was issued on October 28, 2025. India is actively working to implement this arrangement with the US.
US Actions Complicate India's Involvement
The United States revoked a sanctions exception for the port in September. This exception was originally granted in 2018. The US State Department took this step to isolate Iran.
The revocation was meant to take effect on September 29. However, the US later extended this deadline. The situation became more complex earlier this week.
The US announced a 25% tariff on countries doing business with Iran. This move further complicates India's involvement in the Chabahar project.
India's Commitment and Port Operations
India has committed significant funds to the Chabahar port's development. The country will provide a Line of Credit worth $250 million. This amount is in rupee equivalent.
Since 2018, the port has handled substantial cargo. It has processed around 10 million tonnes of bulk and general cargo. The port serves as a crucial access point for India.
It allows India to reach Afghanistan and Central Asia. This route bypasses Pakistan, providing strategic benefits for India's trade and connectivity.
The ongoing discussions with the US highlight India's determination to maintain its presence at Chabahar. The government emphasizes continued engagement despite external pressures.
