India to Build Strategic Railway Lines Along Rajasthan-Pakistan Border
In a significant move to bolster national security and regional development, the Ministry of Railways has announced plans to construct new railway lines along the India-Pakistan border in Rajasthan. This phased initiative aims to strengthen strategic infrastructure and improve connectivity in remote border areas, with potential benefits for both defense and socio-economic growth.
Key Routes and Strategic Importance
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw informed the Lok Sabha on Tuesday that final location surveys are currently in progress for several proposed routes. These include the Anupgarh–Khajuwala–Jaisalmer line and the Jaisalmer–Barmer–Bhiladi route via Barmer. The railway lines are strategically planned along the border to enhance connectivity in these critical areas, providing advantages such as faster troop movement and improved logistical supply chains for the armed forces.
The proposed network will connect key locations: Anupgarh, Bikaner, Khajuwala, Phalodi, Jaisalmer, Barmer, and Bhiladi, extending up to Bhabhar in Gujarat. The Jaisalmer–Bhabhar/Bhiladi route is expected to span approximately 380 kilometers, while the Khajuwala–Jaisalmer line will cover around 260 kilometers.
Socio-Economic Development and Priority
Beyond strategic benefits, this expansion is poised to drive socio-economic development in remote regions. Areas like Jaisalmer and Barmer are anticipated to experience growth in tourism, trade, and employment opportunities upon completion of the projects. Minister Vaishnaw emphasized that such infrastructure initiatives in border areas are receiving high priority from the Railways, underscoring the government's commitment to enhancing both security and prosperity in these regions.
The development of these railway lines represents a dual-focused approach: strengthening national defense capabilities while fostering economic progress in underserved border communities.
