India's Defence Ministry Launches Procurement for Advanced Micro UAV Systems for IAF Special Forces

The Indian Defence Ministry has officially commenced the acquisition process for a state-of-the-art compact unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) system, specifically tailored for the elite Garud special forces of the Indian Air Force (IAF). This initiative aims to enhance operational capabilities in high-altitude and extreme environmental conditions, with the system required to function effectively at altitudes reaching up to 16,400 feet above mean sea level.

Key Requirements and Specifications Outlined in RFI

In a recent move, the ministry released a detailed Request for Information (RFI) soliciting proposals for a 'micro UAV' system. The RFI underscores the necessity for a special forces-friendly, MIL standard-compliant, lightweight, and easily transportable solution. It must feature enhanced Electro-Optical/Infrared (EOIR) Gimbal surveillance and target acquisition capabilities, offering superior sustainability in high-altitude regions compared to existing micro UAV systems.

The proposed UAV is envisioned as a multipurpose system, adaptable to all Indian climatic conditions and terrains during special forces operations. It is mandated to have an operational lifespan of 7 years or 500 landings, whichever occurs first. Additionally, the complete system must be man-portable, with a total weight not exceeding 25 kg, conveniently packed into two all-weather backpacks.

Advanced Operational Capabilities and Environmental Resilience

The micro UAV system is expected to support comprehensive day and night surveillance, target acquisition, and real-time situational awareness. It must operate reliably in extreme environmental conditions, withstanding temperatures ranging from a frigid minus 20 degrees Celsius to a scorching plus 50 degrees Celsius. The RFI also highlights requirements for increased range and enhanced endurance levels, ensuring prolonged mission capabilities.

Notably, the system should be capable of functioning in GPS-denied environments and be scalable to integrate with the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS). It must feature autonomous vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) capability, secure encrypted communication links, and multiple operational modes, including autonomous, manual, and target tracking modes.

Indigenous Procurement Emphasis and Strategic Implications

The procurement process emphasizes indigenous manufacturing, with the RFI specifying acquisition under the 'Buy (Indian–IDDM)' or 'Buy Indian' categories. A minimum of 60% indigenous content is required, aligning with India's broader defense self-reliance goals. This move is part of ongoing efforts to modernize the IAF's special forces equipment, ensuring they are equipped with cutting-edge technology for diverse operational scenarios.
