India and South Korea Elevate Strategic Partnership with New Agreements
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and South Korean President Lee Jae Myung on Monday oversaw the signing of several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) aimed at significantly deepening bilateral cooperation between the two nations. During a joint press statement in New Delhi, PM Modi hailed President Lee's first official visit to India as a pivotal moment that will propel the relationship into a more advanced and futuristic framework.
Modi Praises Lee's Leadership and Shared Democratic Values
Prime Minister Modi expressed his delight in welcoming President Lee, noting that his life story serves as an inspiring example of struggle, service, and unwavering dedication. "Every challenge has only strengthened his resolve to serve the people. Although this is his first visit to India, his affinity for India has been evident since our very first meeting," Modi remarked.
He emphasized the foundational similarities between the two countries, stating, "Democratic values, market economy, and respect for the rule of law are in the DNA of both our nations. We also have a common outlook in the Indo-Pacific region." The Prime Minister highlighted that the partnership is now transitioning into a more dynamic and comprehensive phase, building on over a decade of strengthened ties.
Ambitious Trade Goals and Sectoral Cooperation Unveiled
President Lee announced a bold target to double the annual trade volume between India and South Korea from the current $25 billion to approximately $50 billion by the year 2030. He underscored the mutual potential for growth, saying, "In the era of uncertainty, we share our view that India and Korea can be the most ideal partners for comprehensive cooperation to promote mutual growth and innovation."
The leaders agreed to enhance collaboration across a wide array of strategic industries, including:
- Artificial Intelligence and semiconductors
- Shipbuilding and defense technologies
- Financial services and critical emerging technologies
- Energy, environment, and entertainment sectors
Modi elaborated on this expansive vision, noting, "From chips to ships, talent to technology, environment to energy, we will realise new opportunities for cooperation in every field, and together ensure the progress and prosperity of both countries."
Transforming Trust into a Futuristic Indo-Pacific Alliance
Both nations resolved to work jointly towards ensuring peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region, aligning their strategic interests. Modi affirmed, "Following President Lee's visit, we are going to transform our trusted collaboration into a futuristic partnership." He further committed to continued efforts for an inclusive Indo-Pacific, adding, "Through our shared efforts, we will continue to contribute to a peaceful, progressive, and inclusive Indo-Pacific."
The discussions also focused on strengthening people-to-people connections and cultural exchanges, recognizing them as vital components of the bilateral relationship. The momentum in trade and economic relations, which accelerated after the implementation of the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) in 2010, is set to receive a further boost with these new initiatives.
This high-level engagement marks a significant step in solidifying India-South Korea ties, with both leaders expressing confidence in a collaborative future that leverages technological innovation, economic synergy, and shared democratic principles to address global challenges and foster regional prosperity.
