India has strongly denounced unilateral sanctions imposed by the United States and other Western nations, calling them 'unjustifiable' and asserting that 'pressure cannot replace diplomacy.' The statement comes amid growing uncertainty over the continuation of waivers granted by the Trump administration for India to purchase oil already shipped from Russia, which are set to expire on Saturday.
India's Stance on Sanctions
In a firm rebuke, New Delhi emphasized that sanctions undermine international norms and are not a substitute for diplomatic engagement. The Ministry of External Affairs reiterated that India opposes any extraterritorial application of national laws and maintains its right to pursue energy security and strategic partnerships.
Chabahar and Oil Imports Under Threat
The US waivers, which allowed India to import Russian oil without facing penalties, are now uncertain. Additionally, the Chabahar port project in Iran, critical for India's access to Central Asia and Afghanistan, faces similar risks. India has invested heavily in Chabahar to bypass Pakistan and boost regional trade.
New Delhi argues that such sanctions harm global stability and hurt ordinary citizens more than governments. It has called for dialogue and mutual respect in international relations, urging the US to consider the broader implications of its unilateral actions.
This development marks a test for India-US relations, as both nations navigate complex energy and geopolitical interests. India continues to seek a balanced approach, maintaining ties with both the West and its traditional partners like Iran and Russia.
