India Issues Urgent Advisory for Citizens to Exit Iran Amid Regional Tensions
India has issued a fresh advisory strongly urging its citizens currently in Iran to leave the country "expeditiously". This urgent call comes even as a fragile two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran takes effect, highlighting the volatile situation in the region.
Embassy Emphasizes Coordination and Safety Measures
In a statement posted on social media platform X, the Indian Embassy in Tehran clarified that this advisory is a continuation of an earlier notice issued on April 7. However, it stressed that latest developments have heightened the urgency for Indian nationals to depart. The embassy explicitly advised: "Indian nationals still in Iran are strongly advised to expeditiously exit Iran, in coordination with the Embassy and using the routes suggested by the Embassy."
The mission underscored that all movement must be closely coordinated, issuing a stern warning against any independent attempts to cross international borders. "There should be no attempt to approach any international land border without prior consultation and coordination with the Embassy," the advisory added. To assist those in need, the embassy shared emergency contact numbers and email support for immediate assistance.
Delicate Timing Amid US-Iran Ceasefire
This renewed warning arrives at a particularly delicate moment in the Middle East. US President Donald Trump recently announced a pause in military action and confirmed a two-week ceasefire arrangement with Tehran. This pause is expected to open a narrow diplomatic window, with talks likely to follow in the coming days.
Despite this de-escalation, Indian officials appear to be taking no chances with the safety of their nationals. The decision reflects concerns over the volatility of the situation and the uncertainty surrounding the ceasefire's durability. Authorities are prioritizing precautionary measures to ensure citizen security amidst unpredictable regional dynamics.
Iran's Comprehensive Proposal for Long-Term Settlement
In related developments, Tehran has outlined a sweeping 10-point proposal that it claims could form the basis of a longer-term settlement. The framework calls for US commitments to non-aggression and recognition of Iran's control over the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil route.
Among the more contentious demands are:
- Washington's acceptance of Iran's uranium enrichment programme.
- The lifting of both primary and secondary sanctions that have heavily impacted Iran's economy.
- The removal of United Nations and International Atomic Energy Agency resolutions tied to Iran's nuclear activities.
This proposal adds another layer of complexity to the ongoing diplomatic efforts, as stakeholders navigate these high-stakes negotiations. The Indian advisory serves as a critical reminder of the unpredictable nature of regional conflicts and the importance of proactive safety measures for citizens abroad.
