India Actively Engages Germany Over Ariha Shah Case, Emphasizes Cultural Heritage
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri stated on Monday that the case of baby Ariha Shah remains a point of active discussion with German authorities. He made this announcement during a press conference held in Gandhinagar.
Misri confirmed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally raised the issue with the German chancellor during their recent meeting. This high-level intervention underscores the government's commitment to resolving the matter.
Background of the Case
Ariha Shah was separated from her parents, Dhara and Bhavesh Shah from Ahmedabad, in September 2021. German authorities placed her under foster care following allegations of abuse. The case has drawn significant attention in India.
The foreign secretary expressed deep empathy for the parents during his remarks. He acknowledged their distress, stating that only they can truly understand their difficulties. The government remains fully aware of the situation and is providing assistance at every possible turn.
Focus on Cultural Preservation
A central focus for the Indian government is preserving the child's cultural heritage. Misri emphasized efforts to ensure Ariha is raised in an Indian environment as much as possible.
Key initiatives include:
- Arranging interactions with Indian people in Germany
- Facilitating participation in Indian festivals celebrated locally
- Making arrangements for her to learn Hindi
These measures aim to maintain her connection to Indian culture while she remains in Germany.
Ongoing Diplomatic Efforts
Misri assured that the government will continue following up with German authorities on this issue. He promised to stay with the family at every step of the process.
The Additional Secretary (Europe) at the Ministry of External Affairs maintains frequent contact with the Shah family. The government has committed to providing regular updates as they pursue all possible avenues from their side.
"We believe the matter should be approached keeping humanitarian issues in mind," Misri concluded, highlighting the compassionate dimension of India's diplomatic stance.
