The Indian government has clarified its position on bringing back its citizens from Iran. Officials stated on Friday that commercial flights continue to operate out of Iran. Indian nationals who wish to return can use these available options for now.
Evacuation Plan Only When Flights Stop
Simultaneously, the government is actively exploring evacuation plans. These plans will come into effect only when commercial flights become unavailable. The evacuation will also start if it becomes difficult for Indians to travel within Iran to board those flights.
Conditional Waiver for Chabahar Port
The Ministry of External Affairs provided an update on the Chabahar port project. India has received a conditional sanctions waiver from the United States. This waiver is valid until April 26, 2026.
Officials confirmed that India remains engaged with the US side. The goal is to work out a sustainable arrangement for the port's development.
Monitoring the Situation Closely
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal addressed the media on Friday. He confirmed that approximately 9,000 Indians are currently in Iran. This group includes students, business professionals, pilgrims, and seafarers.
Jaiswal emphasized India's long-standing relations with Iran. He stated that the government continues to watch the unfolding situation very closely. All necessary steps will be taken to ensure the welfare of Indian people.
The Indian embassy in Tehran maintains regular contact with the Indian community. Embassy officials are actively looking after their needs and concerns.
Strategic Importance of Chabahar
Chabahar is a deep-water port located in Iran's Sistan-Baluchistan province. Its location is strategically significant. The port sits close to the Chinese-developed Gwadar port in Pakistan.
Chabahar provides easy and secure access for large cargo ships. India is developing this port to enhance access to Afghanistan and Central Asian markets. This development is a key part of India's regional connectivity strategy.
The project has faced recent turbulence due to international sanctions. There were reports suggesting India might consider pulling out. The conditional waiver from the US aims to address these challenges temporarily.
