India's aspirations to launch commercial seaplane services have taken a major leap forward with SkyHop Aviation successfully conducting a pivotal test flight in Uttarakhand. The seaplane used for testing is a customized De Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter, equipped with floats to enable water landings. Originally operated by Fly Big, which has since ceased operations, the aircraft has been specially adapted for seaplane services in India. Phase One: Lakshadweep Connectivity
SkyHop Aviation's initial phase will involve connecting five islands in Lakshadweep with each other and the Indian mainland. Operations will commence using a 19-seater aircraft, an ideal solution for areas where traditional airports are inaccessible or non-existent. In a statement on X, the company emphasized its collaboration with Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu and the Ministry of Civil Aviation to obtain an Air Operating Certificate soon.
