Indonesia to Sign MoU with India on Election Management and EVM Export
Indonesia is set to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with India on poll management and the export of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), according to a PTI report. The agreement aims to modernise Indonesia's electoral system by leveraging India's expertise in election technology, management, and institutional support.
Details of the Agreement
The MoU will cover collaboration between the Election Commission of India (ECI) and Indonesia's General Election Commission (KPU). It includes technical assistance, capacity building, and the supply of EVMs. Indonesia has shown interest in India's robust electoral framework, which has been used to conduct elections for over 900 million voters.
Impact on Bilateral Ties
This move strengthens India-Indonesia relations, particularly in the domain of democratic governance. The export of EVMs underscores India's growing role as a provider of election technology globally. India has previously exported EVMs to countries like Bhutan and Nepal.
Expertise and Institutional Support
The ECI will share best practices in voter registration, poll management, and election security. Indonesian officials have praised India's use of technology to ensure transparent and efficient elections. The MoU is expected to be signed during a high-level visit.
