Bhopal: Indore Metro Phase I is set to begin commercial service this month, while Bhopal Metro remains stalled at about 7 km, underscoring two divergent trajectories for Madhya Pradesh’s metro projects.
Indore Metro Progress
Indore Metro’s Phase I — which began in 2019 — is completing trials and will enter commercial operations on a roughly 17 km stretch, providing the city with a continuous corridor. Authorities and contractors are taking credit for steady execution.
Bhopal Metro Stalls
Bhopal Metro, also started in 2019, has opened about 7 km of a priority corridor, but work on remaining sections has slowed and timelines have slipped. Bhopal residents and local shopkeepers express frustration. The network, with a mix of elevated and underground sections around central Bhopal and its suburbs, remains partly unfinished, with completion now expected in about two years.
Expert Insights
“Indore got contracts and execution right, which kept the project on track. Bhopal’s work was hampered by piecemeal contracts, delays, contractor disputes and coordination gaps between agencies,” said a metro expert who wished to remain anonymous. “We were promised the metro would be completed within a year, but progress is piecemeal. It’s mostly barricading and signage. Daily life here has been affected,” said a shopkeeper near the stalled stretch in Sindi Colony.
Public Impact
A daily commuter added, “Buses aren’t a real option here and we keep hoping for completion announcements, but it’s one delay after another.” The public impact is immediate — delayed metro expansion in Bhopal means continued traffic congestion, higher costs and disruption for travellers.
Recommendations
Urban experts recommend short-term fixes, accelerate clearances, re-evaluate stalled packages, inject targeted funding and re-sequence works to open usable sections sooner.
