INS Trikand Completes Successful Port Call in Mauritius, Enhances Maritime Cooperation

The Indian Naval Ship (INS) Trikand has officially concluded its port call at Port Louis, Mauritius, marking a significant engagement that included participation in the nation's 58th National Day celebrations. This visit underscores the deep-rooted maritime partnership between India and Mauritius, reinforcing bilateral ties through a series of professional and cultural exchanges.

Participation in National Day Parade and Celebrations

According to an official statement, the port call concluded on March 13, following the ship's active involvement in the Mauritius National Day parade held on March 12 at the Champ de Mars. INS Trikand contributed a marching contingent, a naval band, and an integral helicopter that took part in the flypast, showcasing India's commitment to supporting Mauritius's national events. This participation aligns with a longstanding tradition where Indian naval assets join annual National Day festivities in Mauritius, symbolizing mutual respect and cooperation.

During the visit, Captain Sachin Kulkarni, the Commanding Officer of INS Trikand, held meetings with key Mauritian officials, including Commissioner of Police Rampersad Sooroojebally and Anurag Srivastava, the High Commissioner of India to Mauritius. These interactions aimed to strengthen diplomatic and security ties. Additionally, the ship hosted a cultural evening on board, attended by senior ministers and government officials from Mauritius. Mahend Gungapersad, Minister of Education and Human Resources, served as the Chief Guest, highlighting the event's importance in fostering cultural understanding.

The port call featured a range of activities designed to enhance bilateral cooperation:

  • Professional Interactions: Training sessions were conducted onboard for personnel of the Mauritius National Coast Guard, covering practical aspects such as harbour and sea watchkeeping, firefighting, and damage control procedures.
  • Community Outreach: The ship was opened to visitors on March 12, hosting over 500 guests, which included local residents and officials, promoting public engagement and goodwill.
  • Sports and Cultural Engagements: Various sports fixtures and cultural events were organized to build camaraderie and strengthen people-to-people connections.

After departing Port Louis, INS Trikand conducted a Passage Exercise (PASSEX) and Joint Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) surveillance with CGS Valiant, a Mauritian coast guard ship, before proceeding to the next phase of its operational deployment.
